2017 THEME SHOW: "PLEASE TOUCH"

JANUARY 13 - FEBRUARY 3, 2017

Have you ever felt the nearly overwhelming desire to touch a work of art? Much within the history of art prioritizes optical experiences as opposed to tactile ones. However, there are many artworks now appreciated behind glass in museums that were once created with the intention of being touched, handled, worn, or even used by its owner. In some cultures, works of art include important physical and tactile experiences that are part of its meaning or power within a community. Similarly, in contemporary art the viewer may contribute to the artwork directly through first-hand engagement or by offering their experiences, opinions, and interpretations. In this year’s annual Theme Show, students at the Howard W. Blake School of the Arts responded to the theme of tactile art. Viewers are invited to engage with these artworks through a range of their senses, not just sight alone.
